It takes TWO

Together we are better!

You won’t find good-quality cooperative games on the market now, but Hazelight studio managed to literally break into this niche with its original, but soulful creativity. Their last game “A Way Out” that was released in 2019 had pleasantly surprised me and my co-op friend Alexandr and it gave us a lot of emotions, so we expected something no less exciting from
“It Takes Two”.

This is one of the most interesting co-op games that we have ever played. I have probably never experienced such a childish delight from a joint adventure. In this review, I will share my impressions and tell you why you should pay attention to “It Takes Two”.
Important! There is no single player mode in the game. At all. The whole point is in cooperative interaction between players, so the developers have carefully provided for all possible options for playthrough. Yes, the price may seem biting, but by paying such an amount, you can invite anyone to it, from anywhere. Regardless of where you are (on the same couch or thousands of miles away), you only need to own one copy of the game.

Game has over 95% positive reviews on STEAM, since the relise on 26 of march. The only negative reviews are mentioning the price of the game, which actually a great deal especially if you spit the price between your friend. Even now it still takes the TOP 5 place on charts of the Steam

Josef Fares - director of It takes TWO and founder of Hazelight studio. His first game was Borthers two Tailes, which was released in 2012 and it was succesful as well, from there he knew that making videogames was his passion to bring the joy to many gamers

A co-op can work in several ways:

-Through the “Friend's Pass” - a free version,
he or she can join the owner of the full game.
-Via Remote Play Together on Steam.
-On one TV / monitor screen with two gamepads.
Before It Takes TWO there hasen’t been many games
where only one person has to buy a game and the other can join the session for free, but Hazelight studio decided that this would be the best option.

Story

02.jpg

At the center of the story are Cody and May, whose marriage hasn’t been going well recently. Once, during another quarrel, and unable to agree peacefully, the couple decides to divorce, which upsets their daughter Rose. The girl wants her parents to be together again, and from that moment their life literally turns upside down. Magic turns the main characters into dolls and throws them into a fairy-tale world with a bunch of different tests. An eccentric couple has a unique chance to correct many mistakes in their relationship and understand what they really lack for complete happiness. Will they be able to save their family? What will they do in order to return to their bodies again? Will they be able to rethink their attitude towards many things? See for yourself.

After reading the description, you will probably be in doubts like «won’t it be boring for me to watch someone’s family problems?» I assure you that this very serious topic in “It Takes Two” is shown as simple as possible, without being overloaded with unnecessary details. In addition, it is possible that one of the players will find something familiar in the main characters and may even draw some conclusions. The game is filled with funny plot twists, sparkling humor, and often puts players in completely unexpected situations. It is a pleasure to watch the development of events, especially in pleasant company.

Gameplay

Here I don’t even know where to start. I have never seen such a well-elaborated game, full of references  to other games. Yes, even ten games do not include everything that I have seen in “It Takes Two.” Excellent team puzzles brought us an unforgettable experience. No one was bored, because everyone had individual abilities to solve problems. The game does not get boring, competently manipulating the time, provoking players with different mechanics and intriguing with further events. In addition, it is full of all sorts of references and Easter eggs like hidden secrets from the developers, which made me very happy personally.
The game provides many tools and weapons for each character to complete the chapters. Arm yourself with a hammer and nails, a cannon and a flamethrower, different poles of a magnet, gardening tools or a pocket watch.

Teleport, turn back time, use ropes and rails for your own purposes, skate, fight enemies in an isometric RPG, fly an airplane, become a pirate, meet the inhabitants of the snow globe and the city of dolls and this not even half of what is here. This is exactly the case when it is better to see everything with your own eyes.

Endless fun

With every new chapter new abilities will make the game more entertaining, so you will not get bored, every mechanic is designed for a certain segment of the level. As soon as the location ends, the abilities of the heroes disappear and others immediately replace them. I think this is a very competent move, since an excess of skills would only confuse the players. As for deaths, everything is also as simple as possible. Cody and May cannot die completely. Making a mistake anywhere, you immediately return to the nearest point to try again. The same is with bosses: if you die during a fight while your partner is still alive, then there is a chance to quickly respawn at the touch of a button and continue the battle. If you die at the same time, you will appear at the checkpoint in the boss fight, not at the very beginning. This kind of gameplay will appeal to even those who have never been familiar with games before, seriously. Control both from the keyboard and from the gamepad is intuitive, and prompts with the necessary buttons are constantly displayed on the screen.

The passage of the game lasts about 12-14 hours. During this time, you will have time to change a dozen original locations, defeat about the same number of bosses and solve hundreds of puzzles. Every world your characters go to is unique and detailed. The graphics are bright, you want to admire the surroundings all the time.

At each location, you can find a bunch of different activities and mini-games to compete with your partner. I was simply amazed at the scale of “It Takes Two” and it was a pity that I managed to stay in such beautiful places for only a few minutes. And by the end of each level you feel that joy, happiness and blessing after finishing the chapter, that keeps in your “soul” for a while.

Perhaps the only moment that can cause discomfort among players is the split screen, it cannot be turned off. The same thing happened in Hazelight Studios’ previous game “A Way Out”, which allowed you to see everything that your partner was doing. I don’t think this is a problem, we quickly got used to it. The main thing is to remember who is on which side.

Does it worth the price?

Without exaggeration, this is one of the most exciting co-op adventures I’ve ever played. A lot of mechanics that do not leave you time to get bored even after so many hours, varied and vivid levels with a bunch of fun activities, a strong plot with a serious message, a lion’s share of humor and fun and sometimes awkward moments. Yes, it is possible to complete “It Takes Two” only with your friend or even better with your partner if you want to fix your relationship, because here you need teamwork that truly reveals the essence of the game. Do you have a suitable candidate? Do not hesitate, go on this crazy journey, because there are not that much of truly high-quality cooperative games.
